Arakimentary

Bold and bracing documentary about Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's most controversial and successful photographers, captures the artist's possessive and exhaustive attitude toward capturing raw beauty in images that veer to pornography as often as not. The filmmakers do an excellent job of winning Araki's trust and showing his artistic process and ingenious acts of melding art from everything and everyone around him. With over 350 photo books to his name, Araki is the most published photographer in the world. Special features include filmmakers' commentary, additional footage, original theatrical trailer, English or Spanish subtitles and a photo gallery. Aspect ratio is presented in 1.33:1, with sound presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. (Movie - Three Stars, DVD features - Two Stars) Unrated, 75 mins. (Tartan Video)
