Jumper
Rated PG-13. 88 mins. (D) (One Star) Rumor has it that the filmmakers cut some key scenes from this 88-minute exercise in action without substance. What’s left may be pretty as spectacle, but it doesn’t add up to half of a Jason Bourne flick. A near-death accident causes David Rice (played by Hayden Christensen) to discover his innate ability to teleport himself in and out of bank vaults, across continents, and back into the heart of his childhood crush. Samuel Jackson plays yet another biblically inspired avenger in the guise of a Jumper-hunter called a Paladin. The movie never gets around to explaining or showing who these jumpers and paladins are, beyond breathing figures from a video game. The eye-popping visuals soon devolve into a visual white noise, and you’re left to ponder why you didn’t make a better movie selection.
