The New World
One-hit-wonder director Terrence Malick ("Badlands") condemns his overwrought career to final damnation with a flatulent telling of the ill-fated romance between English settler John Smith and Native American Pocahontas. Colin Farrell ("Alexander") plays Captain Smith to 14-year-old newcomer Q’orianka Kilcher’s Pocahontas while Mailck’s Steadicam focuses on interminable shots of water, trees and mud puddles. Malick’s body-modified American Indians look more like bohemian ravers from the final "Matrix" movie than like any Native Americans who ever walked on the banks of the Chesapeake. "The New World" is a movie that promises to leave its viewers with a bigger headache than you’d get contemplating the current state of global affairs.
Rated PG-13. 150 mins. (D-) (Zero Stars)
